Your Path To Awareness

The Foundation of Every Relationship is...

Relationships are complicated. Whether it’s your family or your business, relationships can be difficult to figure out. They’re even harder to sustain over the long haul.

We would all like a silver bullet when it comes to relationships, some surefire way to ensure a lifetime of happiness and harmony with those around us. While there is no simple formula, it is safe to assume that all interpersonal growth starts with empathy.

Empathy is the ability to relate to others. It is putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. Empathy is at the heart of any good relationship, and it is the mark of a genuine person.

According to Carl Rogers, a pioneering humanistic psychologist, relationships only grow with non-judgmental acceptance. This sounds simple, but it is easier said than done. In the day to day grind, this means that relationships require purposeful displays of empathy.

  1. Spend time listening to people. Respond with kindness, not judgment.
  2. Don’t look to fix their problems; instead, seek to validate their concerns and emotions. If they need a shoulder to cry on, offer it freely. If they want someone to laugh with, be sure to join in.

  3. It’s not easy, but the results are always worth the effort. Relationships starts as seeds, full of potential. Empathy is how we water these seeds, and acceptance is the sunlight that lets it blossom for years to come.
